Geospatial Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Client

ReSource Sverige AB is a company specializing in environmental consulting services. The company offers expertise in areas such as environmental strategies, life cycle assessments (LCA), environmental product declarations (EPD), environmental impact assessments (EIA), waste management, smart cities, and greenhouse gas emission measurements. Their work aims to help companies and organizations integrate sustainability into their operations by reducing environmental impact and improving resource efficiency. Based in Sweden, they have an international presence and collaborate with actors in both the public and private sectors.

This thesis focuses on ReSource Sverige's drone technology and analysis methods used to map greenhouse gas emissions from, for example, landfills and biogas plants. The drones are equipped with sensors that measure concentrations of greenhouse gas emissions in real-time, creating a detailed geographical map of the emission distribution. By flying over large areas, the technology enables high-precision data collection, which is both cost-effective and less time-consuming than traditional methods. The results are used to identify emission hotspots and design measures to reduce climate impact.

Task

ReSource Sverige AB offers an exciting opportunity for a driven student to undertake a thesis that combines geospatial analysis, drone technology, and environmental engineering. ReSource conducts its gas emission analyses using drone technology combined with GIS and an application that manages the data collected during drone flights. In this thesis, you will delve into the analysis method used by the company and further refine and enhance it. We are looking for someone with knowledge in GIS, basic coding skills (preferably in a Python environment), and familiarity with environmental monitoring. Knowledge of gas plume behavior and reconstruction models that can help understand emission sources, dispersion patterns, and environmental impact is a bonus. An overview of relevant articles and research on pertinent analysis methods, combined with insights from experts in the field, will form the basis for the improvement proposals developed during the project.

Previous experience in environmental sampling and fieldwork is advantageous, as the practical component helps ground the research in real-world conditions. As a student, you will receive support from the company's team with expertise in drone technology, gas measurements, and environmental monitoring.

This thesis is ideal for those interested in the consulting role, eager to learn more about environmental monitoring, and have a passion for technology.

Final delimitations will be made in consultation with the company's contact person and the university supervisor. Both the student and the client should be aware that relevant academic grounding must be applied in the work.
