Tools for Calculating Climate Impact

Are you interested in climate impact and the GHG Protocol, and do you enjoy working with Excel? Then you should check out this exciting project!

Client

Automationspartner designs and delivers fully or semi-automated production lines for the medical technology and pharmaceutical industries and is one of the leading suppliers in Scandinavia. The company was founded 30 years ago in Helsingborg, where the headquarters is still located, and now employs 55 dedicated staff members. Sales offices are located in the USA and Ireland.

Automationspartner is built on strong, innovative Swedish engineering traditions and specializes in designing and delivering production lines for the MedTech industry with consistently high production rates. Since the early 1990s, the company has delivered over 300 automated production lines, and its clients include world-leading MedTech companies.

Assignment

Like many other companies, Automationspartner faces the challenge of getting a complete overview of its climate impact. They have previously received a bronze medal in Ecovadis’ global sustainability and social responsibility assessment (https://ecovadis.com/) but now want to take the next step toward gaining deeper knowledge about their operational climate impact. In the long term, the company aims to set climate goals based on the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), which is a method for companies to set science-based climate targets aligned with the Paris Agreement. To do this, the company needs to understand the size of their current climate impact, which they want to calculate by:

  • Developing a model that they can use to calculate their emissions. The emissions should be calculated according to the GHG Protocol.
  • Calculating emissions throughout the entire value chain: Scope 1, Scope 2, and the various categories within Scope 3.

This thesis aims to create a model (preferably in Excel) that Automationspartner can use to calculate its emissions. It is essential that the model is manageable for the company, user-friendly, and tailored to their business. The model should be based on the GHG Protocol (Greenhouse Gas Protocol), which is a global standard for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. This standard divides emissions into three categories:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions occurring from the organization's own activities, such as fuel combustion and emissions from vehicles owned or controlled by the organization.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling.
  • Scope 3: Other indirect emissions, such as purchased materials, product usage, waste management, and business travel, that the organization does not own or control.

The company has conducted a stakeholder analysis, industry benchmarks, and investigations into alternative calculations, including using the company’s enterprise resource planning system.

Final scope will be determined in consultation with the client and the academic supervisor. Both the student and the client should be aware that relevant academic foundations must be applied in the project.
