Sustainable use of AI services in the municipality<\/h1>

A project for you who are curious about the climate impact of AI and what future AI use in government agencies might look like!<\/p>

Client<\/h2>

Lund Municipality is in many ways a leading organisation when it comes to sustainability work. Lund has been designated by the EU to be one of its first climate-neutral cities and Lund has also won several awards in the field. In 2022, Lund was named the global climate city of the year by WWF and was also named Sweden's best environmentally friendly municipality in 2023 by the magazine Aktuell H\u00e5llbarhet. This year, Lund once again won the WWF award, this time in the Swedish edition of the competition. In summary, Lund municipality has great ambitions to develop Lund into a sustainable city - both within the municipal organisation and as a geographical area where the municipality collaborates with both residents and businesses.<\/p>

Background<\/h2>

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in the public sector, both as support for administration, analysis and decision-making. At the same time, AI services are resource-intensive, especially through energy use in data centers, training processes and operating models. The question of AI's environmental and climate impact is rapidly developing, with both research and practice still under development.<\/p>

The municipality of Lund is actively working to integrate environmental and climate perspectives into all operations and is now faced with the need to also include the impact from digitalisation. In order to make well-founded decisions, a comprehensive but structured analysis of the climate impact of AI use and possible policy instruments that promote long-term sustainability is needed.<\/p>

Task<\/h2>

The aim of this project is to provide Lund Municipality with a knowledge base to assess the environmental and climate impact of the use of AI services and to identify possible strategic choices. The project therefore involves three interconnected parts:<\/p>

  1. State of knowledge and research<\/strong>: Compile current research on the energy use and climate impact of AI (e.g. from data centers, model training, and use of generative AI). Identify key factors that affect the climate footprint, such as model size, usage frequency, and data center location.<\/li>
  2. Global intelligence<\/strong>: Investigate how other municipalities, authorities or larger organisations are managing the issue of using AI services and sustainability. Identify examples of guidelines, policies or requirements linked to sustainable AI use. Compile relevant initiatives from, for example, the EU, authorities or international organisations.<\/li>
  3. Analysis and recommendations<\/strong>: Make a general assessment of the environmental and climate impact linked to Lund Municipality's use of AI services, based on data from the client. Make recommendations for how the municipality could approach sustainable AI use, for example through requirements for suppliers of AI services or establishing internal guidelines for employees' AI use.<\/li><\/ol>
