The company

Bengtssons Maskin is a company that, since 1913, has specialized in providing technical products and solutions to the Nordic industry. The company focuses on areas such as hydraulics, mechanical transmissions, and precision solutions. They offer products like hydraulic motors, drive shafts, gearboxes, and specialty screws, as well as services such as consulting, sizing, and assembly to meet the unique needs of their customers.

Bengtssons Maskin is dedicated to delivering solutions tailored to customer needs, with particular attention to safety, sustainability, and efficiency. Their workshop and warehouse are based in Arlöv, but they also provide on-site consulting to ensure the best possible results.

The company is part of the publicly listed Indutrade Group, a global industrial group focusing on high-tech solutions and products for the industry.

Task

Bengtssons Maskin has a long-standing tradition of working toward sustainability. Recently, this includes ensuring that all new vehicles run on electricity or biogas and requiring their suppliers to have a clear environmental policy. Now, the company wants to deepen its efforts by focusing on calculating the environmental and climate impact of the products they sell. This involves, for example, examining carbon emissions from materials, primarily different types of steel, as well as emissions related to transportation. Since Bengtssons Maskin’s products are manufactured both in Europe and Asia, the project also has an international dimension, where dialogue with manufacturers may become relevant.

As a student, you will develop standardized values for emissions from different materials and transport processes to create a basis for calculations. This will involve delving into research, identifying established methods, and exploring how other companies handle similar issues. The project gives you the opportunity to analyze the level of detail that climate calculations should achieve and what is practically feasible, as well as how the results can best be used to develop sustainability efforts.

In addition to the climate calculations, you will also conduct an overarching analysis of Bengtssons Maskin's role in sustainability work, focusing on their impact in relation to suppliers, customers, and owners. You will investigate how the company can maximize its environmental benefits while meeting future requirements, as well as how sustainability efforts can be leveraged to strengthen their competitive advantages.

Final scope will be defined in dialogue with the company and university supervisors. Both student and the company should be aware that relevant academic theories will be applied to the work.
