Efficient climate targets

Company

Kiviks Musteri AB is a family-owned beverage company in Österlen that processes fruits, vegetables, and berries into products such as apple must, juice, cider, purée, and soups. The company has a long history, backed by five generations of accumulated knowledge on how to best handle fruits and berries to preserve their nutrients and freshly harvested flavors. The origins of the musteri date back to 1888 when Henrik Åkersson planted the first apple trees on the site that would later become Kiviks Musteri. Today, Kiviks Musteri is a well-known food company and a popular visitor destination. Learn more on Kiviks Musteri's website.

Kiviks Musteri strives to minimize its environmental impact in all aspects of its operations, from raw material handling to the final packaging. The company holds several certifications, including Fairtrade, KRAV, and ISO 14001, which ensure that sustainability efforts permeate daily operations, with a continuous drive for improvement.

Task

Kiviks Musteri has ambitious goals regarding its climate impact. By 2030, the company aims to be fossil-free in terms of electricity use within its operations and its own transport. They have already made significant progress, as all electricity and heating energy come from renewable energy sources, and the combined contribution from Scope 1 and 2 emissions accounts for less than 0.5%. Some of their transport runs on HVO, and they are also actively working on energy and transport efficiency improvements.

To effectively track progress and guide their actions, Kiviks Musteri sees a need for clear interim targets in their climate strategy. This project aims to explore how medium-sized food companies can work with goal-setting and progress tracking to create an efficient transition to a fossil-free business and value chain, using Kiviks Musteri as a case study.

  • What challenges and opportunities exist in setting climate goals?
  • Which targets should they focus on, now that their Scope 1 and 2 emissions have been minimized?
  • What indicators should they use to monitor progress?

It remains uncertain whether Kiviks Musteri will be subject to the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) requirements for reporting indirect emissions from the supply chain (Scope 3) from 2026. If they are included, they will need to set targets accordingly. If not, can they still take inspiration from CSRD reporting to establish climate goals, work towards fossil-free operations, and prepare for potential future regulations.

Final project boundaries will be defined in consultation with the company’s contact person and your academic supervisor.
