Efficient climate targets

Company

Kiviks Musteri AB is a family-owned beverage company in Österlen that processes fruits, vegetables, and berries into products such as apple must, juice, cider, purée, and soups. The company has a long history, backed by five generations of accumulated knowledge on how to best handle fruits and berries to preserve their nutrients and freshly harvested flavors. The origins of the musteri date back to 1888 when Henrik Åkersson planted the first apple trees on the site that would later become Kiviks Musteri. Today, Kiviks Musteri is a well-known food company and a popular visitor destination. Learn more on Kiviks Musteri's website.

Kiviks Musteri strives to minimize its environmental impact in all aspects of its operations, from raw material handling to the final packaging. The company holds several certifications, including Fairtrade, KRAV, and ISO 14001, which ensure that sustainability efforts permeate daily operations, with a continuous drive for improvement.

Task

Kiviks Musteri has set ambitious climate targets. By 2030, the company aims to be fossil-free in terms of electricity use within its own operations as well as its own transportation. They have already made significant progress—100% of their electricity and heating energy comes from renewable sources, and their combined Scope 1 and 2 emissions account for less than 0.5%. The majority of their transport is powered by HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil). The company is also actively working to improve the efficiency of both energy use and logistics.

To effectively monitor progress and guide future efforts, Kiviks Musteri sees a need for clear interim targets in their climate strategy. This autumn, the company joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and has set both FLAG and non-FLAG targets. Scope 3 is the area where the company faces the greatest challenges in achieving fossil-free operations—what actions should they take to meet these targets and create real impact in their climate work?

This project aims to explore how medium-sized food companies can work with goal-setting and follow-up to enable an effective transition to fossil-free operations and value chains, using Kiviks Musteri as a case study. What are the challenges and opportunities in setting climate targets? Which goals and actions should they prioritize now that their Scope 1 and 2 emissions are already minimized? What indicators should they use to track progress? And how can a smaller company influence actors in the supply chain—both to obtain supplier-specific data and to support emission reduction plans?

Final project boundaries will be defined in consultation with the company contact and your academic supervisor.
